About the fire incident
The tragedy occurred on March 27, 2025, when employees of an external contractor arrived at our facility as part of a major investment project. They were preparing to carry out welding work inside the freezing tunnel, but failed to take the necessary safety precautions. As a result of these omissions, a devastating accident occurred.
A newly purchased conveyor system had recently been installed in the freezing tunnel. The conveyor belt could have been removed from the welding area in approximately 20 seconds before the welding work began, which would have prevented any potential issues, but this precaution was not taken. As a result, the conveyor system caught fire during the work, and due to the nature of its materials, the flames quickly spread. Despite efforts to contain the fire, it could no longer be brought under control.
The fire burned for approximately 48 hours, almost completely destroying the chestnut processing plant, which had provided a livelihood for around 50 people.
Our losses amount to approximately HUF 3.5 billion, and this figure continues to grow day by day, as we are unable to supply our partners with our products, resulting in an ongoing loss of revenue.
the reconstruction
Despite the immense tragedy and financial loss, and the fact that the work of a lifetime was reduced to ashes, we remain positive and determined. Contrary to the initial promises, we have still received virtually no support, and we have even had to change banks. Nevertheless, we remain committed to rebuilding the plant by the autumn months. This is currently our highest priority, as more than 80–85% of our annual production is realized during the short chestnut season that takes place at that time of year.
